Raised in Webster Groves, Dan Johnson, returns to St. Louis with a one-man show that consist of pieces with reference to either bowls or boats, or sometimes both within the same piece. Johnson uses these vessels as a jumping off point to explore life, form and material. His materials are varied and run from concrete to clay to glass.
Johnson says, “I’ve thrown pots for over forty years, and the notion of containment is inherent in the creation of pottery. The simplicity of the bowl form lends itself to a calm holding, an enveloping. I see the boat form as a vessel that carries us to new adventures and takes our life on a journey, it contains our need to see the broader world. Both of these types of vessels contain my spirit, the pots a comfortable stable spirit and the boats the head on down the river spirit.”
